GTA 6 Leaks vs. Extended Look — What CYBERLEEK Got Right and Wrong
Source transparency: All information on GTA 6 Vault is sourced from Rockstar's official trailers, press releases, and Take-Two investor communications. Sections that go beyond confirmed facts are clearly labelled as our own analysis.
The Comparison We've Been Waiting For
On August 18, 2026 — nine days before Rockstar's planned Extended Look — the group calling itself CYBERLEEK released two gameplay clips and an alleged full map of Leonida, followed by a third clip on August 20 suggesting access to a playable build. All footage appeared to originate from a 2023 development build — three years old at the time of the leak.
We covered those leaks carefully, noting throughout that an older build does not represent the final game. Now that Rockstar has officially shown GTA 6 in the Extended Look — and press outlets including IGN attended a separate 30-minute gameplay session at Rockstar North — we can settle the question: what did CYBERLEEK get right, and what has changed?
Important Note on What This Comparison Means
A mechanic being absent from the official presentation does not mean it was cut from the game — Rockstar intentionally withheld significant content on August 27. Similarly, a leaked mechanic appearing different in the official footage simply reflects three years of development iteration. This comparison is about accuracy and evolution, not about judging CYBERLEEK's completeness as a preview.
The Wanted System — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Six Stars, Appearance and Vehicle Tracking
What the leaks showed: A six-star wanted level, plus a police identification system that tracked Jason's appearance, clothing, and vehicle separately. Changing any of these was suggested to help evade law enforcement.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: Six stars are back, and the tracking system is exactly as described — and even more elaborate. Police track appearance, clothing, vehicle, and whether the suspects are operating as a couple or alone. Hollow star outlines indicate police don't have a description; filled stars mean they do. Putting on glasses or just a hat is not enough — a full outfit change is required. Masks prevent a description from being recorded at all.
Rob Nelson confirmed the philosophy explicitly: "The police know what we're driving, so we should just jump out of the vehicle. They also know we're a couple. You could split up, and that will also help lower the police's perception of you."
Verdict: Highly accurate. The six-star return and the multi-element tracking system were both correct. The official version is more detailed and mechanically deeper than the leaks could show.
Stamina in Combat — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Stamina Meter Depletes During Melee
What the leaks showed: A visible stamina bar that depleted as Jason attacked in hand-to-hand combat, with screen darkening at zero suggesting exhaustion.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: A stamina and physical condition system is confirmed in principle — characters gain muscle from the gym and gain weight from overeating, with physical appearance reflecting their condition. Not sleeping or "going on a bender" affects the look of their faces. Whether a specific melee-depleting stamina meter exists in the final build was not explicitly demonstrated during the Extended Look's three mission sequences or Rob Nelson's demo.
Verdict: Partially accurate / Not fully shown. The broader physical condition system is confirmed, but the specific melee stamina depletion mechanic from the leaked build was not explicitly demonstrated. It may exist in the final game but wasn't highlighted in the official presentation.
Vehicle Systems — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Fuel, Storage, and Loadout
What the leaks showed: A vehicle interaction menu with Loadout and Storage options, a vehicle storage capacity indicator of 0/4, and a visible fuel gauge alongside engine information.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: Vehicle storage is confirmed — every owned car has a working trunk where you can store clothes and weapons. Personal Garages across Leonida each have a weapons locker for customising your loadout. These mechanics serve the same functional purpose as the leaked "Loadout and Storage" interface.
A fuel gauge was not explicitly confirmed or shown during the official presentation. It is possible fuel is in the final game but was not featured in the August 27 footage. It is also possible it was removed during development iteration.
The WAINK phone app for scanning vehicles — telling you a car's value, whether it has an alarm/tracker, and what tools you need to steal it — is a new vehicle management system not visible in the leaked 2023 build, suggesting three years of significant mechanical development.
Verdict: Partially accurate / Evolved. Vehicle management systems are confirmed but through different mechanics than the leaked UI. A fuel gauge specifically was not confirmed. The leaked vehicle interface likely reflects an earlier iteration of systems that were reworked and expanded.
Character Stats — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Focus Stat Increases from Activities
What the leaks showed: Jason's Focus stat increased by 2% after making a basketball shot, implying recreational activities feed into a character progression system where specific attributes improve through specific activities.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: A physical character stat system is confirmed. Going to the gym increases muscularity and strength. Overeating causes weight gain. Not sleeping affects appearance. Eating provides health boosts. These are the San Andreas system, modernised and extended into physical appearance.
What was not confirmed by name: the "Focus" stat specifically from a basketball session. The broader principle — that activities improve character attributes — is confirmed. Whether there is a diverse stat tree tracking specific attributes like Focus, Stamina, or Skill across different activity types was not detailed in official August 27 coverage.
Verdict: Accurate in principle. The leaked mechanic (activities → stats) holds up. The specific "Focus" stat name and basketball mechanic weren't confirmed, but the underpinning system is real.
The Leonida Map — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Five Counties, Full Layout
What the leaks showed: A full overhead map with five counties (Lummox, Kelly, Leonard, Vice-Dale, Mariana), Vice City in the south-east, and named locations including Catalan Bay, Gloriana Key, Tequesta Retreat, and others.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: The map is confirmed as "big, a very big map" — larger in scope than Red Dead Redemption 2. The pause screen map uses satellite imagery. The geographic layout shown in official footage is consistent with the CYBERLEEK map's broad structure: Vice City in the south-east, the Keys extending south, rural areas and wilderness filling the north and interior.
County names (Lummox, Kelly, Leonard, Vice-Dale, Mariana) were not confirmed on screen in official materials. Named island locations (Catalan Bay, Gloriana Key, etc.) were not confirmed by name in August 27 press coverage, though the Keys geography is consistent with prior Rockstar materials.
Verdict: Largely consistent / Unconfirmed by name. The geographic layout of CYBERLEEK's map is consistent with everything Rockstar has shown. County and location names were not officially confirmed in the August 27 presentation but have not been contradicted either.
The Morality/Reputation Icon — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Honour or Reputation System
What the leaks showed: A symbol resembling a devil or negative reputation icon appeared after Jason continued attacking a downed NPC — suggesting a possible morality or honour system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: The Criminal Profile system is confirmed as the spiritual successor to RDR2's honour system — and it is exactly what the leaked icon was signalling. Your profile shifts based on patterns of behaviour: unnecessary violence, escalating situations you could have walked away from, or consistently choosing the most destructive option. Acts of relative civic decency (binning your rubbish, feeding animals) prevent your profile from shifting in the darkest direction.
Nelson: "There isn't a right or wrong way to play this game, but consistent actions may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out."
Verdict: Accurate. The leaked icon was showing exactly what it looked like — a reputation/profile consequence for aggressive behaviour. The final system is more sophisticated than the leak revealed.
The Dual Currency Display — CYBERLEEK Claimed: Two Separate Money Figures
What the leaks showed: Two separate money figures on screen, potentially representing cash on Jason's person and money stored elsewhere.
What the official Extended Look confirmed: Money is confirmed to matter more narratively in GTA 6 than in previous games — you will sometimes need to raise capital to advance missions. The specific dual-figure display was not shown or explicitly addressed in official August 27 materials.
Verdict: Not confirmed / Not contradicted. The presence or absence of separate cash-on-hand and stored-wealth figures in the final game was not addressed in official coverage.
Visual Fidelity — Then vs. Now
The leaked footage was from a 2023 development build. Three years later, the question is how dramatically the game has been refined.
The answer is significant. IGN's reviewer, who watched the Extended Look ahead of Netflix release and observed a live gameplay session, called it "the best I've ever seen a game look on PS5, and it could hold its own against most high-end PC games." Specific highlights: character animations calibrated to individual height and build, realistic hair rendering, lighting that accurately reflects off vehicles and water, and facial expressions that communicate emotion and fatigue.
The CYBERLEEK footage — even acknowledging the 2023 timestamp — showed a game that was clearly functional but not finished. The August 27 official footage represents the end of three additional years of polish. The character models, environmental detail, NPC animation variety, and lighting are substantially beyond what the leaks showed.
Verdict: Dramatically improved. This is the expected result of three years of development, but the scale of the visual improvement between the leaked build and the final game is striking.
What Was in the Leaks But Not Shown Officially
Several mechanics from the leaked footage were not addressed in the official Extended Look:
- Vehicle fuel gauge — not confirmed
- Melee-specific stamina meter — not confirmed
- Specific Focus/stat tree by name — not confirmed
- Lucia gameplay (beyond cameos) — CYBERLEEK claimed access to Lucia's prologue in later leaks, but the prologue was not shown in official August 27 materials
- Strip club interior footage — teased by CYBERLEEK but not addressed officially
None of these absences mean the mechanics don't exist in the final game. The Extended Look was a curated presentation, not a comprehensive feature list.
Overall Verdict
CYBERLEEK's leaks were a largely accurate structural preview of GTA 6 — particularly for the wanted system, the general character of Vice City, the Keys setting, and the Criminal Profile concept. The six-star return, the appearance-tracking evasion system, and the broader reputation mechanic were all confirmed exactly as described.
Where CYBERLEEK fell short was in representing the full depth of what three more years of development added. The WAINK scanning app, the tiered car-theft system, the relationship mechanics, the interactive safehouse model, the evolved NPC behaviour — none of these were visible in the leaked footage because they weren't built yet, or weren't in the build CYBERLEEK had access to.
The leaks were always a 2023 snapshot of a game that Rockstar continued building for another three years. The Extended Look showed what that additional three years looks like: a game that is systematically deeper, visually superior, and more mechanically layered than anything the leaks could have predicted.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026.
