Source transparency: All information on GTA 6 Vault is sourced from Rockstar's official trailers, press releases, and Take-Two investor communications. Sections that go beyond confirmed facts are clearly labelled as our own analysis.

What This Article Covers

This is a mechanics-focused breakdown of Rockstar's GTA VI: An Extended Look (August 27, 2026) and the accompanying press session at Rockstar North. We focus exclusively on gameplay systems — how the game plays, what mechanics are confirmed, and how they compare to what the August 18 CYBERLEEK leaks suggested.

Everything below is sourced from Rockstar's official presentation and IGN's exclusive gameplay demo with Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North. Where a mechanic was also present in the leaks, we note it. Where the official version differs from or expands on what the leaks showed, we note that too.

Combat

The Extended Look confirms a significantly reworked combat system that is more nuanced than any previous GTA entry.

New: Incapacitation targeting. Players can now aim for an enemy's arm or leg to incapacitate them non-lethally rather than kill them. It is also possible to shoot a weapon directly out of an NPC's hand to disarm them. This brings a layer of tactical choice to combat that GTA 5 never had.

Cinematic kill shots. Particularly impressive moments of violence trigger slow-motion cinematic camera angles — a mechanic carried over and evolved from Red Dead Redemption 2's headshot animations.

Escalation is a choice, not a default. The game's design philosophy around combat has changed fundamentally. Rob Nelson explains: "In previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful. You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that." NPCs can be armed, can choose to escalate, and the world responds dynamically to aggression.

NPC reaction range. Pulling a weapon on an NPC may cause them to flee — or may cause them to escalate. Taunting an NPC could result in them being offended, ignoring you, or attacking. Pointing a gun at someone without firing can be enough to de-escalate certain confrontations. This is a binary system made into a spectrum.

From the leaks: The August 18 CYBERLEEK clips showed a stamina meter depleting during melee combat, with screen edges darkening when stamina reached zero. A stamina system specific to melee was not confirmed or shown explicitly in the official Extended Look, though the reworked criminal profile and physical stat systems suggest body condition affects performance.

Driving

Vehicle mechanics have received their most substantial overhaul since GTA 4 introduced physics-based handling.

Tiered car theft. Cars are now categorised by a tier system. Simple, older vehicles can be accessed with a slim jim. Higher-end, modern vehicles require a key cloner. Some parked cars are completely inaccessible early in the game — certain tools are only acquired through story progression. However, any car with a driver in the seat can always be carjacked in the traditional way.

The WAINK app. Before stealing a parked car, players use a new phone app called WAINK (yes, really) to scan the vehicle. WAINK tells you: whether it's locked or alarmed, whether it has a tracker, how much it's worth if sold to a fence, and how much it would cost to register as a personal vehicle. It also tells you what tools you need to get inside.

Tracker-equipped vehicles. Some cars are fitted with advanced GPS tracking systems. If you steal one without deactivating the tracker, you must drive fast enough that the police cannot coordinate a response — like the film Speed applied to car theft. Driving too slowly alerts law enforcement to your location.

Vehicle trunks. Every owned vehicle has a working trunk where you can store a change of clothes and weapons. This is practical: changing clothes mid-escape is a key wanted-level evasion tool, and having a fresh outfit in the boot of a car makes that possible without returning to a safehouse.

Narrower, denser streets. Vice City's road network is intentionally more realistic and compressed than GTA 5's. Nelson warns: "The streets in this game are narrower and more realistic in terms of scale. Which, in addition to all the density of the traffic on the roads, makes driving slightly more challenging and requires a bit of skill." At three wanted stars or higher in the city, a vehicle escape often becomes more dangerous than going on foot.

From the leaks: CYBERLEEK showed a vehicle interface with Loadout and Storage options, a vehicle storage capacity indicator, and what appeared to be a fuel gauge. Vehicle storage via trunks and personal garages with weapons lockers is confirmed. A fuel gauge was not explicitly confirmed in official materials.

The Wanted System

The wanted system has returned to six stars — confirming CYBERLEEK's claim and reversing GTA 5's five-star cap.

Witness or alarm required. The Wanted Level system does not trigger passively — a crime must be witnessed by an NPC or an alarm must be tripped. Commit a crime in a location with no witnesses and no alarm, and you walk away clean.

Police track specific details. When dispatched, officers receive specific information about the crime — what the suspects look like, what they're wearing, whether they are a couple or alone, and what vehicle they're driving. Each of these is tracked separately by an icon on the HUD under the wanted level indicator.

Hollow star = no description. If police have not received a description of you, the wanted stars appear as hollow outlines rather than filled stars. This means as long as you leave a crime scene without being seen, you should be able to walk away without triggering a pursuit even if the crime itself was reported.

Evasion tools:

  • Change hairstyle (removes appearance icon but police still know your clothing)
  • Change full outfit (clears clothing description; a hat alone is not enough)
  • Use a mask during the crime and remove it immediately after (prevents description even reaching police)
  • Swap vehicles (clears vehicle description)
  • Split up (if reported as a couple, separating reduces police identification confidence)
  • Use alleys and foot routes in the city (often better than vehicle escape at high wanted levels)
  • Put distance between you and the crime's "hot zone," which remains marked on the map for a period

One star vs six. Nelson: "One star is not going to be too difficult to get away from. You can see with these little icons on-screen, the police know what we're driving, so we should just jump out of the vehicle." Six stars is the full, classic GTA maximum-chaos experience.

The Criminal Profile System

This is the most significant new mechanical system confirmed by the Extended Look. It replaces — or rather, evolves — the honour/morality systems from previous Rockstar games.

Not a morality meter. The Criminal Profile is explicitly not a "good vs evil" scale. There is no correct or virtuous way to play GTA 6. The system tracks patterns of behaviour — specifically, whether you consistently cause more harm than the situation requires.

What shifts your profile: Engaging in unnecessary violence when you could have walked away. Escalating situations that had a non-violent resolution. Continuing to attack downed NPCs. Consistently choosing the most destructive approach to every situation.

What does not shift your profile negatively: Crimes committed during missions. Robberies. Defending yourself when attacked. Getting into fights that NPCs initiate against you. Nelson: "If you're doing things on mission that you are required to do — or you're robbing places, or somebody comes and messes with you and you have to deal with them — that's all fair game."

What improves your profile: Small acts like throwing your own rubbish in a bin. Feeding animals. Not escalating confrontations unnecessarily. These don't make you "good" — they just keep your profile from trending in a specific direction.

Consequences: Your Criminal Profile affects how the world reacts to you in the open world and may affect how some story moments play out. It does not gate content or lock you out of anything fundamental.

From the leaks: CYBERLEEK showed what appeared to be a devil/reputation icon appearing after Jason continued attacking a downed NPC — suggesting a morality or honour system. This was accurate. The Criminal Profile system is exactly that concept, significantly expanded and made more nuanced.

Character Stats and Physical Condition

GTA 6 brings back a form of the character progression system last seen meaningfully in San Andreas.

Gym improves muscularity and strength. Jason and Lucia can visit gyms, and regular workouts increase muscle definition and affect their physical capability.

Overeating causes weight gain. Eating provides a substantial health boost but excess consumption visibly affects the characters' appearance over time — a direct San Andreas callback.

Sleep deprivation is visible. Going on a bender or not sleeping will be reflected in the characters' faces. The state of Jason and Lucia physically reflects how you've been treating them.

From the leaks: The basketball clip from August 18 showed Jason's Focus stat increasing by 2% after making a shot, implying a character attribute system. A gym-based progression system is confirmed. The specific "Focus" stat from recreational activities was not confirmed in official materials by name, though the broader system of activities affecting character attributes holds up.

Activities and Mini-Games

Leonida is packed with things to do beyond story missions. Confirmed activities include:

  • Pool
  • Mini golf
  • Kayaking
  • Gym workouts
  • Zoo visits (with an animal study checklist, similar to RDR2's compendium)
  • Scuba diving
  • Parachute jumping
  • Classic Car Collection — track down abandoned classic cars across the map, restore them, and add them to a personal collection via a commission from eccentric collector Wyman
  • Robberies — rob stores, businesses, and banks, alone or as a couple
  • Fencing stolen goods — stolen jewellery, cars, and other items are sold to fences scattered across Leonida
  • Gang contraband raids — specific gangs like the PTT Youngin$ in Southside Vice City can be targeted for their illegal goods

The In-Game Smartphone

The phone has been redesigned completely, both functionally and visually.

New presentation. The camera now zooms in on Jason or Lucia's hand when they pull out their phone, making it an actual in-game item rather than a HUD overlay. This mirrors how Red Dead Redemption 2 shifted to first-person when Arthur cleaned a pistol.

WAINK — car scanning app for vehicle analysis before theft.

Ryde Me — taxi fast-travel app. If travelling with a passenger, you can hold full conversations across the journey.

Snapmatic — the returning Instagram parody. Due to Jason and Lucia being on the run, they cannot post their own content. You can lurk, follow accounts, and browse — but not share your location through the feed.

Texting Jason/Lucia. While playing as one character, the other may text you about the day, remind you to lock up, or ask where you are. Ignoring these messages may affect the relationship meter.

Dual Protagonist Switching

Protagonist switching works largely as in GTA 5, with important additions.

Switch at almost any point during open-world play. Switching may be disabled at specific story moments to preserve narrative coherence.

Summon your partner. When playing solo, you can call or text Jason/Lucia and they will travel to your location. You can then explore together, commit crimes together, or simply hang out.

Passenger mode. While travelling in a vehicle together, you can switch who is driving — useful during chases where one character shoots from the passenger seat while the other drives.

Couple avoidance during heat. When wanted as a couple, splitting up reduces police confidence in their suspect description, as they lose confirmation that the targets are still together.

Stealth

Stealth in GTA 6 is systemic rather than a dedicated mode. The reworked movement system includes improved running, jumping, and climbing for fluid evasion. Wearing a mask before committing a crime and removing it during escape prevents a physical description from ever reaching the police — even if you're caught on CCTV during the act. The hollow-star wanted system means that committing crimes without witnesses creates no pursuit at all, incentivising careful planning over brute force.

Overview

GTA 6's mechanical depth is the story of August 27. Every major system shown represents a meaningful evolution from GTA 5, drawing heavily from Red Dead Redemption 2's approach to world interaction, NPC behaviour, and player consequence. The result is a game where the world genuinely pushes back.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
