This article compares only confirmed facts. GTA 5 is fully released and documented — everything about it is verifiable. For GTA 6, we only reference what Rockstar has officially announced or what is directly observable in Trailer 1 and Trailer 2. Rumours, leaks, and third-party claims are excluded.
Setting: Los Santos → Leonida
GTA 5 is set in Los Santos, a fictional version of Los Angeles, with the surrounding Blaine County countryside. The map is large but geographically a single county in Southern California.
GTA 6 is set in the State of Leonida — confirmed by Rockstar in their press release: "Set in the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond." Florida is the real-world inspiration. The map includes Vice City (Miami-inspired), swamplands, beaches, and rural areas visible in the trailers. Whether Leonida is larger than GTA 5's map has not been officially quantified.
Protagonists: Three Men → Lucia & Jason
GTA 5 had three male protagonists: Michael De Santa, Trevor Philips, and Franklin Clinton. Players could switch between them freely in the open world and missions used all three.
GTA 6 centres on Lucia, the series' first female protagonist in a mainline entry, and Jason, her partner. The exact nature of the protagonist system — whether you switch freely as in GTA 5, play primarily as Lucia, or have another structure — has not been officially described by Rockstar.
World Detail — What the Trailers Show
GTA 5, released in 2013, set a high bar for open-world density. GTA 6's trailers show what appears to be significantly more detailed environments: crowds with more varied behaviour, more detailed building interiors visible in scenes, weather effects with visual quality beyond GTA 5, and animated fauna in outdoor environments.
These are observations from official trailer footage. Whether these details hold up across the full open world, in normal gameplay rather than curated trailer sequences, is something only the released game can answer.
What Is Still to Be Confirmed for GTA 6
Many things that were features of GTA 5 have not yet been confirmed for GTA 6: GTA Online or any multiplayer component, the protagonist-switching system, heist structures, property buying, stock markets, the full mission variety, and GTA 6's map size versus GTA 5's. Rockstar has not detailed any of these in press materials.
