GTA 6 Online: Everything Confirmed About Rockstar's Next Multiplayer Mode

Source transparency: All information on GTA 6 Vault is sourced from Rockstar's official trailers, press releases, and Take-Two investor communications. Sections that go beyond confirmed facts are clearly labelled as our own analysis.

Is GTA 6 Online Confirmed?

Not officially. Rockstar has not released an announcement titled "GTA 6 Online" or shown any gameplay footage of a multiplayer mode.

Current official messaging around GTA VI focuses entirely on the single-player campaign featuring Jason and Lucia. Rockstar's store pages and support materials describe GTA VI as a single-player experience without mentioning multiplayer features at launch.

That said, given that GTA Online became one of the most profitable live-service games in history — generating revenue for over a decade — virtually nobody expects Rockstar to abandon online multiplayer entirely. A successor is widely anticipated. It simply has not been announced.

Will GTA 6 Online Launch Alongside the Game?

This has not been confirmed, and current indications suggest it may not.

When GTA V launched in 2013, GTA Online followed two weeks later — on October 1, 2013, not September 17. Rockstar allowed players to experience the single-player story first before opening the multiplayer world. Many fans and analysts expect Rockstar to follow a similar strategy with GTA VI, letting the story mode have its moment before introducing online.

This is not confirmed. Rockstar has not announced whether GTA 6 Online will be a day-one feature, a post-launch addition, or something else entirely.

Will GTA 6 Online Be Separate From the Main Game?

Unknown. Three structures are possible:

  1. Bundled inside GTA VI — included with every copy, like GTA V
  2. Separate download — a standalone mode released after launch
  3. Free-to-play standalone — like GTA Online became on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022

Rockstar has not confirmed which structure they are planning. The fact that GTA VI is currently described as a single-player product has led many fans to believe the online component will exist separately, at least at first.

Will GTA 6 Online Replace GTA Online?

Not confirmed. Rockstar has not announced when — or whether — GTA Online will end.

Take-Two Interactive has previously described GTA Online as a long-term platform with ongoing value. Three scenarios are possible:

  • GTA Online continues running alongside a future GTA 6 Online
  • Rockstar gradually migrates players from Los Santos to Leonida
  • GTA 6 Online eventually becomes the sole long-term platform

No timeline or decision has been officially communicated.

What Features Are Expected?

None of the following have been confirmed by Rockstar. These are community expectations based on GTA Online's evolution and publicly available information.

A Larger World Based on Leonida

If GTA 6 Online uses the same map as the single-player game, players would have access to Vice City's urban environment, beaches, swamps, rural areas, and small towns across the State of Leonida — a significantly larger and more varied playground than GTA Online's Los Santos.

More Interactive Businesses

GTA Online's business model — allowing players to own nightclubs, bunkers, agencies, and criminal organisations — is expected to return and expand. Vice City's setting naturally accommodates clubs, hotels, car dealerships, real estate, restaurants, and criminal enterprises.

Improved Roleplaying Features

The popularity of GTA RP servers has demonstrated strong player demand for structured roleplay. Rockstar's acquisition of Cfx.re — the team behind FiveM and RedM — has raised speculation that Rockstar may build more official roleplay infrastructure into GTA 6 Online. This has not been confirmed.

Larger Player Sessions

Some reports have suggested Rockstar has been developing multiplayer technology capable of supporting larger player counts than GTA Online's current sessions. No official player count has been announced.

Character Creation

GTA Online's defining feature is creating a personal character separate from story protagonists. It is widely expected to return. Improvements to the customisation system — more realistic clothing, body options, and animations — are anticipated but unconfirmed.

Crossplay

Rockstar has not announced crossplay between PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. GTA Online currently separates players by platform. Cross-platform multiplayer would represent a significant change and has not been confirmed.
