GTA 6 Map Size vs GTA 5 — What We Know Before Launch

Source transparency: All information on GTA 6 Vault is sourced from Rockstar's official trailers, press releases, and Take-Two investor communications. Sections that go beyond confirmed facts are clearly labelled as our own analysis.

One of the most debated questions about GTA 6 is also one of the least officially answered: how big is the map?

Rockstar has confirmed the game takes place across the State of Leonida and has named six distinct regions. What they have not done is publish a map with scale, announce an area in square kilometres, or make any direct comparison to GTA 5's world size. Every specific number you've seen online is a fan estimate — not an official figure.

Here is what we actually know, what can be reasonably estimated, and why the size debate matters less than most players think.

GTA 5's Map as a Baseline

Before comparing, it helps to know what GTA 5 actually delivered.

GTA 5's playable world — Los Santos and Blaine County — covers approximately 49 km² of landmass, or around 80 km² including the surrounding ocean and waterways. For context, that made it one of the largest open worlds of its generation.

The map comprised:

  • Los Santos — the dense urban core inspired by Los Angeles
  • Blaine County — rural areas, desert, farmland, and small towns surrounding the city
  • Mount Chiliad — the game's major elevated terrain, in the northeast
  • Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay — smaller communities in the rural north

It was a varied map, but geographically it told one story: a California-inspired state with one dominant city and a lot of open countryside around it.

What GTA 6's Six Regions Suggest About Scale

GTA 6 has six officially confirmed regions, each with a distinct environment and character:

Region Type
Vice City Dense urban metropolis
Leonida Keys Tropical island chain
Grassrivers Wetlands and swampland
Port Gellhorn Coastal / former resort town
Ambrosia Rural / industrial interior
Mount Kalaga National Park Northern wilderness and mountains

The crucial difference from GTA 5 is not just the number of regions — it is their geographic diversity. GTA 5's Blaine County was essentially one continuous rural environment with different textures. GTA 6's non-urban regions are each structurally different: an island chain requires open water between landmasses, wetlands require a specific low-lying geography, and a national park with mountains requires significant elevation change.

That level of environmental variety is difficult to achieve in a compact space. Geographically, these environments would naturally push the map outward rather than overlap.

Fan Estimates: What the Community Believes

Community mapping projects — based on trailer frame analysis, road geometry, and comparisons to real Florida geography — have produced estimates ranging from 1.5× to 3× the size of GTA 5's map.

The most widely cited estimate places Leonida at roughly 2× the landmass of GTA 5, which would put it at approximately 100 km² of playable land.

These estimates are informed and methodical, but they are still estimates. Rockstar controls the actual scale, and trailer footage is not a reliable measurement tool — camera angles, movement speed, and deliberate misdirection can all skew community calculations.

The community estimates should be treated as plausible expectations, not confirmed facts.

Why Rockstar Hasn't Confirmed the Size

This is deliberate. Rockstar has never officially announced map dimensions for any GTA game prior to release. There are two likely reasons:

  1. It invites comparisons that can disappoint. If Rockstar says "the map is 2× GTA 5," players will measure every inch and complain if it falls slightly short. Saying nothing removes that pressure.

  2. Raw size is a poor indicator of quality. A large empty map is less engaging than a smaller dense one. Rockstar's marketing focuses on the diversity and density of Leonida's environments, not a square kilometre count — because that is the more meaningful pitch.

What Actually Matters More Than Size

GTA 5's map felt large not because of its measured area, but because it was dense with content. The city felt alive, the countryside had activities, and traversal across the map always had something to look at.

GTA 6's design philosophy appears to take the same approach but applied to a more varied world. Rockstar's trailers emphasise:

  • NPC density and behaviour — crowds of people recording events, reacting dynamically to the environment
  • Enterable buildings — shops, clubs, marinas, and interiors confirmed through official material
  • Regional identity — each area has a distinct economy, culture, and character rather than just different scenery

A Leonida that is 1.5× GTA 5's size but packed with this level of detail would be a more substantial experience than a 3× map that feels sparse.

What We'll Know on Launch Day

The exact map size will be measurable once players explore Leonida on November 19, 2026. Community mappers will have accurate dimensions within days of launch.

This article will be updated on launch day with:

  • Confirmed landmass area based on community measurement
  • Direct visual comparison to GTA 5's map
  • Breakdown of each region's approximate size
  • Travel time comparisons between key locations

Until then, the honest answer remains: Leonida is confirmed to be geographically diverse and almost certainly larger than GTA 5 — but the exact figure is Rockstar's to reveal.
